THE WATCH
Thinking of Thelonious Monk and of a relation to time, it was obvious to create the tribute watch to the most famous composition of Thelonious “Round Midnight”.
The idea of the hands going around 24 time was at the same time a tribute to his music and the unique personality of this genius. The color had to be blue from the numerous compositions of the artist (“Light Blue” for example) and the whole aspect of the watch kept in a very simple manner in the same way as the simple complexity of Monk’s music.
“Round Midnight” is not only one of the most played standard of Modern Jazz, but it also represents its history from the days Monk was inventing Modern Jazz with Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker in the 40’s. Monk had the song written but couldn’t find the intro and the coda and Dizzy completed the song with an undisputed Dizzy’s style. The song was registered strangely under Cootie Williams, Duke’s trumpet player for whom Thelonious was working then, as it was the usage to give the songs to your leader. But it was finally attributed to Monk.
Another glimpse, is the band. Monk (always had different rings and hats) had a very special ring with 2 diamonds where one could read MONK and its reverse KNOW (“Always Know” a preferred citation of Monk). We did the same on the band were it can be read MONK and KNOW. If one song will be played in 1000 years from now, it will be Thelonious Monk’s “Round Midnight”, we think it has some relation with Time !
